In 1996 the South Reno Rotary Club started their Most Improved Student Program to recognize high school students who, despite their disadvantaged situation, successfully completed the path to high school graduation. Difficult life events such as illness, abuse and homelessness are just some of the kinds of obstacles these young adults have triumphed over, all while earning their high school diploma. The South Reno Rotary Club recognized that in the world of Scholarship Awards, where academic aptitude is normally awarded, the students who were grinding hard even though their lives outside of school were more difficult than most, deserved some recognition and financial assistance to pursue education beyond high school.
Since the program began, they have recognized more than 200 students and awarded approximately $65,000 to more than 60 students. Now in it’s twentieth year, the Achievement Beyond Obstacles event reached out to us to design a poster, flyer and tickets. This year’s theme is ‘Helping Our Youth Take Flight’. We created a double exposure image that embodies the liberating feeling these students have when they’ve overcome their adversities to successfully complete their studies and receive their high school diploma. We centered our campaign around this image, drawing upon it for the crisp, clean color palette that coordinates well with the Reno Rotary’s existing Achievement Beyond Obstacles logo.
